While Metro Rail has not issued a statement clarifying the status of its services to the south of the city, the railway line through Amanzimtoti has taken a battering and will not be functional for at least several days.
This follows the torrential deluge that dumped more than 256mm of rain in Amanzimtoti between Sunday and Tuesday, 24 and 26 July.

Photos supplied by ward councillor, Andre Beetge show that between Pahla and Amanzimtoti railway stations, there is a section of the line in extent of about three metres which is suspended in mid-air, the metre-plus of soil beneath it having been completely washed away.

Arriving at Toti station, the tracks snake their way on a meandering path, having lost their way up the bank. That section of track is also completely unpassable.

Another section of the track in the vicinity of Bernadotte Street has been covered in gravel that was moved along by the water which swept through at dusk on Monday evening.

The trek through Warner Beach is equally impassable, with the carriages still at a standstill from yesterday’s incident in which a passenger train derailed slightly, just north of the Warner Beach station.

Commuters will need to make alternative plans for travel while the railway line is out of commission, and employers are asked to be patient as their workforce find alternative means of arriving at work.
