Hijackers stop, shoot motorist dead on R603

The VW Polo has since been recovered in Adams Mission

A MOTORIST was shot dead by hijackers on the R603 near Kingsburgh West on Friday morning at about 5.30am.

According to Toti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, the complainant and her partner were driving in a blue VW Polo when they noticed a silver grey Peugeot behind them that signalled for them to stop.

“Her partner pulled over on the side of the road and got out,” said Capt Van Der Spuy. “The vehicle behind them also came to a stop and four occupants got out, armed with firearms.

The gunmen approached their vehicle and demanded the keys, which he surrendered, but they continued to assault him. He tried to run away and collapsed. One of the gunmen came to the passenger side and tried to take her handbag. She resisted and he hit her with the butt of the firearm and pulled her out of the vehicle. She heard a loud bang, which sounded like a shot.”

The men jumped into both vehicles and drove off. The woman said they tried to run her over before they sped off.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, her partner was declared dead. He had an open wound to the left side of his chest.

Amanzimtoti SAPS is investigating a case of hijacking and murder.

“The VW Polo has since been recovered in Adams Mission. No arrests have been made,” said Capt Van Der Spuy.

It was also confirmed the silver grey Peugeot driven by the criminals was reported stolen in Umlazi and is still missing.
