Monkey shooter evicted

People need to remember it is illegal to fire weapons in a residential area

A MONKEY shooter was evicted from an Illovo Beach holiday resort after he was found to be shooting monkeys he was baiting with food.

Tracey Rowles of Umsizi Umkomaas Vervet Rescue Centre said she found two monkeys under the same tree outside the nursery, paralysed from being shot with a pellet gun.

“I am forever picking up monkeys from there that have been shot,” she said. “Sadly neither monkey survived as they had to be euthanased. I also picked up a baby recently which had been shot in both the head and chest. Sadly it died, despite all our efforts.

People need to remember it is illegal to fire weapons in a residential area.”

Owner of Under The Tree Pre-School, Esta van Deventer said residents at Wavecrest Holiday Resort saw the man feeding bread to the monkeys. “He then lay across his wife’s car and shot them with a pellet gun,” she said. “We lost five monkeys in two weeks.” The contractor who was booked in to stay longer at the resort was evicted about two weeks ago due to his cruel actions.

Umsizi Umkomaas Vervet Rescue relies on donations to continue its good work.
