Patience urged as mall replaces escalators

The brand-new escalators are scheduled to be fully operational in October.

Galleria Mall management appeals to customers to remain patient regarding the continued problems it is experiencing with its escalators and promise it will soon be resolved.

“It’s frustrating for us, as much as it is for you,” said Galleria Mall general manager, Kurt Hoggan.

“We have had endless problems with our escalators and while we agree that it is unacceptable, we are reliant on the experts to get them up and running safely.

Otis, our appointed contractor which maintains the escalators, has assured us that everything possible is being done to secure the parts from overseas as quickly as they can.” Initially it was founded that the chains on the escalators were stretched and had to be replaced. The chains were ordered from overseas, but the incorrect ones were delivered.

The correct parts were re-ordered and upon installation, it was established that the parts were badly damaged and not advisable to be installed.

“The decision has since been taken to purchase brand-new escalators for the entire mall,” said Kurt. “This means all the escalators will be replaced.

In the interim, Otis is working on getting the escalators operating intermittently provided they are safe for our shoppers to use. Alternatively there are eight lifts servicing the mall and eight staircases or ramps for shoppers to use.

The brand-new escalators are scheduled to be fully operational in October. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience.”
