How to apply for a seniors grant

When in possession of all of the above documentation, the applicant must present themselves to the SASSA office.

Pensioners who are 60 years and older with an income less than R5,500 per month can apply for the senior citizens grant.

“It is not a pension, but a grant of substance to ensure that those who were unable to make provision for their golden years for whatever reason don’t starve,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

The following documentation is required:

* Copy of ID document

* Proof of address

* Copy of spouse’s ID

* Copy of marriage certificate

* If divorced, a copy of the divorce decree

* If widowed, copy of the death certificate

* Three months recent bank statements

* Proof of any investments, annuities or additional income

* If a home owner (whether the dwelling is occupied by the applicant or rented to a third party) the latest municipal valuation certificate.

* If the person is older than 60, but has never applied for the grant before, an affidavit stating the reason for not applying at the age of 60, whatever the reason might have been.

“When in possession of all of the above documentation, the applicant must present themselves to South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) office. The office that serves the larger Amanzimtoti area is situated within the Thusong regional centre near Umgababa between Illovo Beach and Umkomaas,” said Cllr Beetge.

“There the resident will be issued with an AI annexure form that has to be completed using all of the above documentation, which in turn has to be signed in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths.

“A copy of the completed and signed AI annexure, along with the original and all documentation attached then has to be submitted to SASSA for consideration of the grant.

Residents who qualify are welcome to make an appointment for assistance as my office has successfully secured AI annexure forms and we are therefore able to assist on most weekdays between 8am and 9am at 423 KIngsway, Amainzimtoti, opposite High Tide flats.”
