Breaking news: Vagrants dropped in Lower Illovo canefields

They said they were picked up by Metro Police on Durban beachfront and told this was part of the Durban clean-up.

Six to 10 vagrants, some covered in dried blood, were dropped at the entrance to Mother of Peace (MoP) early on Wednesday morning by Metro Police.

According to MoP general manager, Iris Canham, her staff members witnessed the men being dropped by four Metro Police vehicles when they arrived for work at about 7am.

“My staff spoke to six of the men, but they think some were already in the sugarcane, so it could have been about 10 of them,” said Iris.

“They were scared, but spoke to them to find out where they had come from. They said they were picked up by Metro Police on Durban beachfront and told this was part of the Durban clean-up.”

The men asked the MoP staff members where the nearest police station was, as they had no idea where they were and they wanted to return to Durban.

The staff were afraid to return home in the afternoon for fear the men still lurked in the sugarcane fields.

“We were also worried about our children, many of whom walk through the sugarcane after school,” said Iris. “To safe-guard them, we curtailed all extra-mural activites on Wednesday.”
