Umgababa nipper Syanda Mnguni (13) of Fast Track Lifesaving Club will represent KZN after he scooped a number of medals at the KZN nipper champs on Scottburgh beach last month.
He is hard at work preparing for the SA nippers champs taking place from 31 March to 2 April at Addington Beach, Durban.
The Amagcino Primary School grade 7 pupil has been a Nipper since December. “That’s when I passed my nipper test conducted by Roy Carty at Scottburgh,” said Syanda.
“I got into it because I enjoy swimming. I recently completed my first Midmar Mile. I also do canoeing in the Umgababa development squad led by Swelihle Ndlovu at Umsimbazi River. I love riding waves, especially with the board.”
The young go-getter dreams of being a lifesaver when he’s older and becoming an SA Navy diver.
“I am a good swimmer and I have won two medals in swimming competitions at Kings Park pool.
All youngsters should get into sports instead of doing drugs. And they should be water-wise and beware of drowning, especially people living along the coast,” said Syanda.
