Lions buoyed by peace poster creations

Local schools show off artistic talents.

THE Lions clubs of Amanzimtoti, Ethekwini South and Kingsburgh jointly hosted the first round of judging of the Lions Clubs International Peace Poster contest at a cocktail evening at St Mary’s Anglican Church hall in Warner Beach on Wednesday, 21 October.

“Pupils of Athlone Park Primary and Warner Beach Preparatory participated in the art competition, each one individually showing their interpretation of the 2015-2016 theme of ‘share peace’,” said peace poster convenor, Moira Rigby.

The winners are: First, Navendran Naidoo of Warner Beach Prep; second, Zahra Khushab of Warner Beach Prep and third, Megan Henry of Athlone Park Primary. A highly commended went to Tegan Short of Warner Beach Prep.

Navendran’s poster will go forward to the next level of judging at the Lions mid-year conference in Ladysmith in November.

The contest has been running for some 26 years and is gaining in popularity internationally. It encourages children aged 11 to 13-years-old to think of creative ways to express their ideas of what peace means to them.

Prizes are awarded at all levels of judging, culminating in the international grand prize of US$5,000 and a trip to the USA to attend the awards ceremony for the winner, two family members, one being a parent or guardian and a member of the sponsoring club.

In addition, 23 merit winners each receive US$500.
