Update: Two killed in light aircraft crash

It is believed the deceased are a student and instructor from the Durban Aviation Centre.

Two men died after their light aircraft crashed next to the northbound lane of the N2 highway in Illovo at about 2pm on Tuesday, 25 August.

According to initial reports, the Cessna 173 suffered engine problems and the pilot steered it to land on the highway. However, the aircraft clipped an electrical cable over the highway and plunged into a sugarcane field, barely metres from the roadside.

An eyewitness said one of the men was attempting to exit the aircraft when it exploded.

It is believed the deceased are a student and instructor from the Durban Aviation Centre.
