Sardine run takes South Coast fairways by storm

Sunday, 21 June is Fathers Day golf day.

THE Sardine Run has eventually arrived – both the little silver fishes as well the hoards of golfers which gravitate to the South Coast in June to play in this fantastic tournament every year.

The theme at each course is varied but at Umkomaas Golf Club, the theme was ‘tropical’ and just about every player dressed up to suit the theme, which made it colourful and full of carnival atmosphere.

To all the players, your outfits were fabulous. As yet, there are no overall results since the the tournament only finishes on Monday but it was guaranteed that every player has a stunning long weekend with weather to match. Well done to the organisers of the tournament – as always it was a great success.

Four UGC women, Natalie Single, Michelle van der Merwe, Sabiha Bacaus and Annette Gillett played in inter region semi finals at Richards Bay, all winning their matches. The Umdoni team (with Natalie Singer) defeated the Durban region, going through to the finals to play for the championship trophy. Umdoni team (with Sabiha Bacaus, Annette Gillett and Michelle van der Merwe) beat the Midlands team and that team goes through to play for the plate. Congratulations to both teams and their players on their wins and very good luck to both teams in the final.

Back to reality, on Wednesday the competition was the usual individual stableford and once again the club welcomed Mike and Magda Espach to both the competition and the club. There was a new winner this week – congratulations to Deneys Williamson on his 41 points to take first place, followed by Simon van den Bosch in second slot on 39 points. Wally Kent, freshly back from his trip to Australia and winning ways, took third place with 37 points followed by Rob Mathias in fourth spot, counting out Michelle van der Merwe, both with 35 points.

Next Saturday, 20 June is the sixth round of the Alliance league – the competition is starting to hot up, so get your teams together.

On Sunday, 28 June the Allerton league players are hosting a fundraising day and your contact to join the competition is Nelson on 082-428-9000.
