Good Samaritans help Warner Beach lagoon heron

This after the Centre of Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) was informed of the heron's plight two weeks ago.

TWO good samaritans helped remove a rag trapped in a heron’s beak at Warner Beach lagoon on Sunday, 22 February.

Glen Jansen and Dave Murgatroyd from Warner Beach Ski Boat Club assisted the heron.
This after the Centre of Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) was informed of the heron’s plight two weeks ago.
Shane Cheary of Warner Beach Ski Boat Club explains: “Two members of the Warnerdoone Ski-Boat club managed to lure the bird with sardines as bait and capture the bird with a cast net. A large rag was removed from the bird’s beak and the bird was returned to the river successfully without any hindrance or injuries,” he said.

“The Crow team are thrilled to hear that the heron has at last been caught and had the offending rag removed from its beak. We have been out on numerous occasions to try catch it, but with its full strength and the ability to fly still on its side, catching him proved difficult. Inevitably though, he got weaker and fortunately some locals were on hand to catch him this past weekend. This is just one example of how fantastic the local Durban South community is at pulling together to help an animal in need and we’d like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in helping this Heron,” said marketing and communications officer, Paul Hoyte.
