Eye in the sky to curb festive season crime

This is an example of the private sector coming forward to secure our beaches.

Rest assured, when you visit Toti main beach this festive season, big brother has an eye on you and your possessions.

A pan, tilt and zoom camera, costing R20,000 and sponsored by ET Security and Skytec Wireless, was installed on the top of the beach office, which is manned by the security company’s control room.

“We sponsored the equipment, control room and staff, with assistance from Leon of Skytec Wireless,” said ET Security South Coast managing member, Tony Lokker.

“This is an example of the private sector coming forward to secure our beaches,” said Sapphire Coast Toti Tourism (SCTT) chairman, Jacques van Schalkwyk.

“This is a pilot project for December to get our beaches secured under camera surveillance.

We are looking for funding to have two permanent cameras cover the parking area and get cameras up at Doonside, Winkle and Umkomaas beaches. We need local businesses and people willing to be involved and assist with this project to come forward.” Contact Jacques via email at chairman@totitourism.co.za.

A temporary control room has also been set up at the beach office over the festive season, with representatives of Toti SAPS, Metro Police, the Community Crime Prevention Organisation, beach law enforcement, SCTT and private security companies to better manage and control, and increase response time for incidents.

Toti main beach is also patrolled by members of these stakeholders to ensure your visit to the beach this holiday is a safe one.
