UPDATE: Beached whale is being butchered (with video)

People are cutting off pieces of the dead mammal.

eTHEKWINI Municipal workers and members of the public were hacking off pieces of the humpback whale which washed up on Toti beach, about a kilometre from Pipeline beach, earlier this morning.
A large crowd has gathered at the site, with some taking selfies and others climbing up on the dead mammal.

People are walking down a steep hill from Ocean View Drive, Toti to get access to the beach. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife officials were on the scene.
As the whale is too large to move, it will be cut into smaller pieces, possibly tomorrow, before its carted off the beach.

  4. No man don’t climb and walk all over the poor whale. Have some respect and dignity. Would you walk over a human corpse?

  8. The poor thing was dead, why waste the meat when so many are hungry? How is it a good idea to take your child to see a beautiful, DEAD animal?

  9. I wouldn’t allow my children to watch this poor animal being hacked and put into municiple packets. Onlookers are laughing while doing it too. Who’s coordinating the removal of this creature? The locals for sale in Isipingo?

  10. This is not human have a bit of respect this is so sick leave the poor wale alone dead or alive it’s cruel! No respect for this people butchering and climbing on this poor beautiful wale!

  11. This articles states “As the whale is too large to move, it will be cut into smaller pieces..” Does this statement mean KZN Wildlife is not equipped to move an animal of this size? What is the plan of action next time an animal of this size beach to rescue the animal?

  12. Its sick, instead of apprecaited the gentle giant we show no mercy. It can only be in South Africa. Really disgusted. Other coutries would have tried every possible means of dragging the animal back out to sea, but not here. What does one expect, we dont respect follow human beings how would we an animal. Sad really.

  13. this is utterly sick and disturbing. this is one of God’s magestic mammals how dare the poor helpless, lifeless creature be treated in this barbaric manner. To all those disrespectful people walking, sitting and standing on the whale, would you like for someone to walk all over your corpse. Butchering the whale, HOW DARE YOU and these are municipality workers why is this not being stopped. surely you can move it off the beach with the help of tractors…….

  15. Its a whale its dead yes it is beautiful but no its not a carnival attraction you dont take ur kids to an accident scene do you? So why let it rot if people wish to eat it so be it,personally I think it would be better if it was done by the municipality and given to whom ever wishes to take it though.

  16. What about the cause of death they cant just say a whale washed up on the beach y did it wash up was it sick was it old need reasons before slaughtering what if the animal is toxic what if it has got a sickness well we can only wait and
see if the people taking pieces get sick

  17. As sad and ‘disturbing’ this is… it is necessary.. has anyone ever smelled and seen the rotting corpse of a whale.. i have and it is not pleasant.. this whale lived and is now dead.. it will fill up the landfill and stink out the area if it is fully removed by municipality. but instead people could use this tradgedy for food/bait whatever they need.. you who have full cupboards and full tummies have no right to turn away people who need this. they are helping the community get rid of what will soon rot into a eyesore and what could bring more harm than good if not removed (disease/flies/putrid stench). how long do you think the municipality could take to remove it.. noone is hurting anything here..

  18. This is no different to how we treat the thousands of animal that land up on your plate each night the, only difference is that’s all done behind closed doors and this poor animal is exposed. I don’t eat meat because I’m ashamed how humans have little or no respect for an animal dead or alive! At least I get to back up my life choice and show my children how discusting the human race is to the animal kingdom.

  19. Sad to see. As they say, you can take the animal out the bush but you can’t take the bush out the animal. Savages . What is happening to a once, beautiful South Africa?

  20. What utter nonsense!!! Obviously those cunning people don’t care about what has happened to that poor mammal. It just shows these days anything is possible. Poor thing.

  21. Magnificent creature. Yes, people should cut it up and feed themselves. I don’t see anything wrong with that. The animal has probably died naturally. People should make a difference in society instead of ridiculing each other. If you think these guys are wrong for eating a dead animal… what have YOU done today for all the animals sitting at SPCA for example?????? Get a life.

  22. So you steak you eat for dinner comes already wrapped and placed in supermarkets? Jeez, some of the comments here are simply way too emotional. The poor whale has passed, it is a corpse, it is dead. It is also a food source, like a chicken or a cow. You all think that food comes in packages, it doesn’t, it starts off as a walking, living, breathing creature.

Get over yourselves, if you lived on a farm or in a rural area this is how you would feed your family. Get over yourselves.

  23. HOW wonderful there is still hope for our country and its people….. at least they waited for it to die in its own way and was not butchered by the many trawlers that sail our seas and cross the boundaries…borders or whatever it is called out at sea and by taking the meat as barbaric as it might seem it makes the authorities work so much easier

  24. A Whale ,an animal A beautiful creature created by GOD has to die like any living being.Unfortuntely it had to be this one that caught the attention of our eyes. There are many whales n animals die unoticed. As for walking or sitting on a dead whale, think of all the ants u trampled on which were alive.

  25. Ummm, do they know whale meat contains mercury and is not entirely healthy to eat. Charming.
