Toti fairy godmothers kit teen out for matric dance

Well-wishers offered her dresses to choose from, shoes and to do her hair, nails and make-up for free.

Thanks to the kind hearts of the Toti community, a matric pupil will have the opportunity to feel like Cinderella for one night.

The girl, who will remain anonymous, posted on a social media page, asking for help to attend her matric dance as her family could not afford it.

Within half an hour, well-wishers had offered her a variety of dresses to choose from, shoes and to do her hair, nails and make-up for free. Photographers even offered to do her photos for free and plans are underway to drive her to the dance in a limousine. The fairytale ending prompted a Toti woman, who prefers to remain anonymous, to start a social media page, entitled Fairy Godmother Amanzimtoti to help other matrics in a similar situation.

“This is a page for everyone. I just give the community a platform,” she said.

“I started the page the day after the matric pupil asked for help, because I thought it was a good way to help others who are stuck in the same predicament. Coming from a family that didn’t always have money when I was growing up, I would have loved the opportunity to have put less financial pressure on my parents, as I am sure most young adults do.

With three main high schools in the area, there are three matric dances a year, so there will be people from each school that need help.

I really just want to help people, and help them look pretty and feel special too, even if just for one night.

Nothing is financed. I do not look for any remuneration or expect anyone else on the page to either. This is where people with the materials or skills who want to assist, can.

I do not have any expectations that people should help. I have hope that some people have good hearts and help where they can.

If anyone needs help, they or their parents can message me or post on the page.

If they want to remain anonymous, I will try the best I can to help them with what they need. I know it is hard to ask for help, especially when it comes to money, but that doesn’t mean they should suffer for that.

I hope we can show people that by helping where we can, we have the ability to be and do better. I hope I get the opportunity to help as many people as I can. That is really what it is all about.”

The matric pupil was also the beneficiary of KZN well-wishers when her story was picked by Damon Beard’s ‘Big Favour’ on Monday, 28 July after Kirsty Maxwell wrote to East Coast Radio. “I don’t know the girl and only met her on Monday,” said Kirsty.

The Purple Tulip offered her a dress, East Coast Cab offered to transport her in a 1956 London cab, Rage in Galleria will shoe her and The Spa in Fairway will treat her to a day’s pampering.
