Nonagenarian twins still close after all these years

They have lived in the area since birth.

TWINS, May Kirkman and June Borchert, both residents of Mooi Hawens Retirement Home in Winklespruit celebrated their 90th birthdays on Wednesday,18 June.

The sisters who live together in a flat, attribute their longevity to healthy living, not overdoing things and keeping up-to-date with what’s going on in the world.

They celebrated the big day with family from Australia and England.

The duo have a long association with Warner Beach and have lived in the area since their birth. They attended the then Warner Beach Primary School and part of the land the school now stands on was donated by their grandmother, who owned the Warner Beach Hotel.

After primary school, they attended technikon in Durban and both qualified as commercial secretaries. They have only left the area on two occasions. During World War 2, May and June were deployed to the Airforce Women’s Auxillary in Pretoria for five years, where they worked as secretaries in the transport and wages sections.

On their return to Warner Beach, May married Lawrence and June tied the knot with Ted. The second time the sisters left the area, May moved to Howick with Lawrence, where he was the town clerk for 17 years and June moved to Eshowe for five years.

After the death of their husbands, they moved in together. They only settled at Mooi Hawens about 18 months ago. Both relish living there and are involved in the various activities on offer. “There is always something to do and somewhere to go,” said May.

In their younger years, they played a variety of sports and belonged to the Warnadoone Dramatic Society. “God has been good to us,” said June. To keep busy they knit, belong to a choir, attend gym and play bingo.

May has three children and a grand-daughter and June has two children and five grandchildren.
