Nothing sweet about sugar cane ash

Is Illovo Sugar taking advantage of black communities? Surely there must be an alternative.

EDITOR – I have been a resident of Umgababa Africa area for about three years.

I am experiencing a problem with the black flakes that are blown by the wind from burning sugarcane fields.

My observation is that sugarcane is burnt when the wind is blowing towards the south, towards black residential areas, either in the morning or afternoons. These flakes get into our houses and are a nuisance. You are forced to close windows and doors. If you have left washing on the line, you are in big trouble.

On Tuesday, 25 March I took my car to a car wash in the afternoon, but the next morning between 5.30am and 6am the car was just black. It is even worse if it lands on the dew.

My question goes to Illovo Sugar – why have I never experienced flaking in areas like Winklespruit, Illovo or Warner Beach? Is Illovo Sugar taking advantage of black communities? Surely there must be an alternative.

Illovo Sugar owes everyone an explanation regarding their policy on air pollution management.

  1. Unfortunately it is not a black thing. We, here in Warner Beach, also get the black ash from burning sugar cane.

It is just one of those things you have to accept when you live close to cane fields. Same as when you buy a house close to an airport and then complain about the aircrafts noise.

  2. Ahhh well. Illovo Sugar a racist Company? The Author states that this NEVER happens in Winkelespruit or Warners…..only in BLACK areas…… mhhhh makes me wonder: There are living areas for different Racegroups? Thought that went in the 90’s out of fashion. And by the way if this is correct then I am living in a Black area as well….. because we too get a fair share of the flakes. And we live in one of the mentioned areas. WHY is everything a racial thing with some? Unless the Whites can somehow control the wind and weather this is just a lot of racist garbage.

  4. My parents have the same issues in Winklespruit. We even get it to lesser extent here in Umkomaas. So no, its not just Umgababa. Its just something we live with. Doesn’t happen that often.

  5. It does not happen to only black communities,I live in illovo and all my life we have had this problem.

  6. Hi. When I lived in doonside we often had the black flakes on the car and the washing so it is strange it has become a racial issue but let’s look at the bigger picture is illovo sugar responsible for the wind? I don’t think so but if you do find out who is responsible for the wind ask them because they might be taking advantage of the black communities. I can recall learning about the wind at school in grade 5 that in the mornings and evenings you get an offshore wind.

  7. I lived in Kingsburgh for 25yrs and the burning of the sugarcane and never thought to complain. What the hell. Have just moved to Sabie and the road I drive on for 3kms has never ever been tarred so my car and house is dusty every day. Please ask yre racist letter writer who I should blame??? Black or White. Omg get over yourself. The government is Black so blame them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Hardly a racial thing for goodness sake. I live in St Wins and always have the problem while the cane is being burned. I have heard my fair share of racial blaming, but this one takes the cake! Unbelievable stupidity.
