R1,2-m science centre project boosts Isipingo school

A R1,2-million science centre sponsored by Golden Pond 67 (Pty) Ltd of Gauteng was offically opened at Strelitzia Secondary in Lotus Park, Isipingo on Wednesday, 23 October

The project was co-ordinated by Abel Paul Kannieappan, an experienced physical science teacher.

“I sourced the funds for this project when I saw a need for a pupil development centre that promoted science teaching and learning,” he said.

The Golden Pond Science Centre has a lecture room for teaching and learning, a computer and learning centre for science research and study purposes, a lesson preparation room and a chemical and apparatus storeroom.

Due to a large number of pupils, the lab was also used as a classroom. Although the 30-year-old physical science laboratory was revamped, it was not conducive to learning. Pupils faced each other and not the board, which resulted in minimal interaction with the teacher.

Furthermore the lab work benches were much higher than classroom desks, which made writing difficult because standard chairs were used and the lab could not be set-up for practical work.

“Teaching of physical science became more challenging and impacted on pupil performance. It became clear we needed a venue for science teaching that encouraged full pupil participation and another to conduct practical work.”

Golden Ponds' vision was to improve teaching and learning in the science field. “The centre will play a role in increasing access to science and science-orientated career opportunities for disadvantaged pupils in the community. It will also be used for science teacher development and computer training workshops.”

The project took almost a year-and-a-half to complete and pupils are eager to start using the room for lessons. The study centre is already in use by grade 12 pupils.
