Dumping mindset needs to change

WARNER Beach resident, Margie Farron, a regular walker along Kingsway is dismayed at the amount of rubbish dumped in the bushes between the railway line and road.

“On Thursday, 19 September I was shocked to see about eight old television sets strewn in the bushes. There are dumpsites in the area, why can’t the owner dispose of them properly,”she said.

Margie has lived on Kingsway for 25 years, and said the state of the area has deteriorated over the years. “If one had to walk along the road, they will notice all sorts of items, bottles, plastic chairs, plastic and more.”

Durban Solid Waste has various illegal dumping control programmes that concentrates on community involvement and law enforcement to eliminate or reduce illegal dumping.

The department appeals to the public to assist it to stop illegal dumping. If you are witness to an offence, take the registration number of the vehicle or the address of the person dumping and report it to DSW helpline on 031-311-8804, email DSWCustomer.ServiceLine@durban.gov.za or the Ombudsperson on 080-020-2020.
