Vandals strike again in Toti

This was not the first time an incident similar to this has happened in Amanzimtoti.

UNDER the cloak of darkness on September 26, a wastewater pump station in Amanzimtoti was vandalised, setting back the work that had been done to get the sewage outfall problem under control.

The Riverside 1 pump station is at the corner of Hutchison and Riverside roads, opposite the Civic Centre. Ward 97 councillor André Beetge said the vandalism directly affected the flow from the nearby high areas.

“There will be possible outfall and subsequent smell into and from the adjacent stormwater system. Outfall can also incur into the Amanzimtoti River near the Hutchison Road bridge,” said Beetge.

The pump station’s electrical board was stripped of wires and copper, rendering it out of commission at the time of publication. Asked whether it was an act of sabotage to keep the ward’s infrastructure inoperational as there have been other similar occurrences, Beetge said he does not believe so.

“No, it’s opportunity founded in unemployment, substance dependence and a sense of lawlessness with open opportunity during scheduled load-shedding,” he said.

Local security companies have been working with the police to shut down illegal scrapyards that have mushroomed outside Amanzimtoti where stolen municipal infrastructure has been found.
