Bird flu warning sounded in Amanzimtoti

A few birds have been found dead in Amanzimtoti.

THE KZN Marine Stranding Network (KZNMSN) has warned that cases of avian influenza (HPAI H5N1), commonly known as bird flu, have been reported in the province, and it is asking people to report all sightings of dead birds along the coast.

The KZNMSN said it is important that the authorities attempt to stop the sick birds and people from spreading the virus.

“This could have a devastating effect on our wild and domestic bird populations. Authorities need to keep a record of how many cases have been observed, and where,” it said in a statement.

Sapphire Coast Tourism’s Romy Wenzel said a few birds have been found on the beach by teams doing clean-ups.

“After receiving the warning from the KZNMSN, we have since spotted several dead seabirds along the coastline. Two were found at the Amanzimtoti lagoon on August 22, and one was found at the mouth of the Illovo River,” said Romy.

Members of the public are encouraged to report dead bird findings and the location of the birds to the KZNMSN by sending a WhatsApp message to 083 941 6243.
