#CasualDay – Miss Deaf SA finalist strives for change

The Amanzimtoti resident aims to develop career opportunities for deaf people, while encouraging the youth to pursue their dreams.

MISS Deaf SA finalist, Nikita Pillay, is determined to win the pageant so she can develop career opportunities for young deaf people.

The 27-year-old, who hails from Amanzimtoti, shares her story in commemoration of the Casual Day annual fundraising campaign held by the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD).

Already launched, the campaign runs until September 1, which is Casual Day. The theme of Casual Day 2023 is #ShareASmile with Persons with Disabilities. The theme aims to promote kindness, goodwill, and positivity in support of persons with disabilities in South Africa.

Nikita is one of 12 finalists who will be heading to Cape Town on September 9 for the finals. “Being selected as a finalist significantly changed my life. I obtained new knowledge, acquaintances and confidence. I felt proud of who I am, and not ashamed of my impairment. I also walked around with a sash to attract attention and raise awareness for deaf people,” she said.

However, her journey to the finals was not easy. “The process leading up to this point was difficult, but having family and friends support was uplifting. I was able to stay optimistic and believe in myself,” she said.

Nikita was born deaf, and uses sign language to communicate. “I used to use hearing aids when I was younger, but stopped because I was too sensitive to loud noises. It would give me headaches and make me uncomfortable, so I couldn’t concentrate in class while wearing them,” she said.

Nikita attended Fulton School for the Deaf and faced several challenges while growing up. “However, I overcame my insecurities and worries by accepting who I am,” she said.

She is determined to win the title in order to develop career opportunities for deaf people, while encouraging the youth to pursue their dreams. “Deaf people can do everything that hearing people can. I can alter the world, and it is in the people’s hands to make a positive influence,” said Nikita.

Outside of pageantry, she enjoys cooking and hopes to one day manage her own café while providing new employment prospects for young deaf people.

Nikita’s advice to others is to not be ashamed of who they are or where they come from. “Be proud of yourself, and you can change the world for the better. Impossible does not exist; potential exists all around you, so seize any possibilities that come your way,” she said.

NCPD’s national director, Therina Wentzel, said, a smile can trigger a positive chain reaction of wonderfully, uncontrollable proportions.

“Casual Day has raised over R404m since 1995, thanks to the wonderful support of members of the public who purchase their stickers from participating retail stores, participating companies, our 600+ beneficiary NPOs and schools that renew their participation every year. The proceeds go to persons with disabilities at schools, homes and workshops represented by the participating beneficiary organisations,” Wentzel added.

In support of Casual Day, individuals and organisations are encouraged to purchase Casual Day stickers (R20 each) and specially branded merchandise before September 1, and to wear them with pride on the day. Visit www.casualday.co.za to find out where purchases can be made, or to order personalised stickers.
