Ward 97 sewage crisis update

Most of the outfall is caused by the improperly disposed foreign matter.

SEWAGE outfall because of various reasons remains a constant concern in ward 97 as eThekwini Municipality is yet to come up with a solid strategy to tackle this city-wide dilemma.

Ward 97 councillor, André Beetge, said on one hand there is the old infrastructure that needs to be maintained or replaced, while on the other hand, there is the consistent foreign matter that finds its way into and contaminates the system.

“We conducted a series of local oversights with the head of sanitation, the area engineer and two superintendents from respectively networks and mechanicals recently and can offer some updates,” said Beetge.

The pump near Subway Road in Warner Beach is under repair after foreign matter entered the system. The Warnadoone pump has been removed and will be replaced with a new one as previously reported.

Beetge said the installation contract is in the finalisation process and should stop the constant outfall at Baggies Beach.

“The amount of solidified fats and other matter coming off the Kingsway line in Warner Beach is just not stopping. We have requested the health department to conduct inspections of all food outlets and to implement maximum fines if fat traps are found non-compliant,” he said.

Plans are also in place to relay a completely new line which should be the end of the continued outfall into the Amanzimtoti River from the Kingfisher line. The inspection noted that Riverside 2 located in the bush between the Civic Centre and the river is running manually and the telemetry system requires attention.

Riverside 3 next to the Amanzimtoti River was damaged by foreign matter, which accounts for spillage from the adjacent manhole. Beetge said quotations have been requested with an escalation of urgency.

“Phahla 2 in Athlone Park is still not functional with outfall onto the beach below that might be related to a compromise within the network. Plans are in place to filter the outfall using sand filtration while investigations are being done to pinpoint the cause,” he said.

The inspection also noted that no pumps were operational at Golf Course, Nyati, and Marshall roads. Beetge said this will be investigated and addressed urgently.
