PHOTOS: Artwork brightens up the town

Not only do the murals make Amanzimtoti attractive to visitors, they also showcase the attractions as each tell a different story of what to do and what to see.

SAPPHIRE Coast Tourism, with the help of volunteers, public employment programme (PEP) workers and a talented artist, is in the process of repainting murals across the town.

The community tourism organisation’s Romy Wenzel said their current projects are murals in the parking area at Amanzimtoti Main Beach and the Warnadoone Way bridge.

“We extend thanks to PEP workers, Muzi Khanyase and Sizwe Ngcobo, for their help in preparing the walls at Toti Main Beach so the new murals will last longer. The old brickwork kept peeling off, so they created a concrete ‘canvas’ for Christine Andrews to paint on,” she said.

At the moment, the projects are on hold as Andrews is unwell. Wenzel asked the community to wish her a quick and complete recovery so she can return to do the work she enjoys.

“Work will resume once she has fully recovered. Anyone willing to assist her can contact me as her mural artwork and other art projects are pretty much her full-time income,” she said.

Some of their other wall-painting projects in the past stretch from Athlone Park to Umkomaas. “Murals are painted to create a positive impact within the community. It also makes our town and region attractive to visitors, as well as showcasing the Sapphire Coast Region’s attractions as all the murals tell a different story of what to do and what to see,” said Wenzel.

She added that the more Sapphire Coast Tourism membership gets generated, the more projects can be considered going forward.

“The new financial year started on July 1, therefore, existing members, as well as new tourism-related projects, are requested to renew and/or sign membership. The focus of the non-profit organisation is positive marketing and branding of the region’s products, attractions and activities,” said Wenzel.
