Seed of Hope celebrates 20 years of restoration

Over the last 20 years, its vision has been to restore communities through restored individuals.

SEED of Hope (SoH) Community Development, which celebrated its 20th anniversary, serves to uplift and empower individuals and families across Bhekulwandle.

Since its inception in 2003, SoH has believed that development is not something to be done for people, but it is something to be done with people.

Co-founder and chairperson, Heather Liebenberg, said its vision of ‘restoring communities through restored individuals’ expresses the belief that change starts at an individual level and grows to community.

“Over the years, SoH has touched the lives of countless individuals through its diverse programmes and initiatives, from offering after-school support for children and assistance with subject choice and career guidance for high school learners to adult skills programmes, which include basic computer training, sewing and baking,” she said.

Liebenberg said adding a social worker to their offering, through a partnership with Ulwazi Training and Development, has also gained traction and proved to be a helpful resource for the community.

“There have been many challenges along the way, and one thing that has been certain is the importance of collaboration and partnership, with networks such as the Better Together Network, the Amanzimtoti and Bhekulwandle Community Police Forums, volunteers, sponsors, churches, intercessors and individuals,” she said.

Liebenberg said they were incredibly excited to celebrate two decades of service to the community.

“Our journey has been one of compassion, resilience, and the unwavering belief in the power of community. We have witnessed, first-hand, the incredible transformations that occur when individuals and organisations come together to support and uplift one another,” she said.

To commemorate this milestone, SoH has planned a series of events and fundraisers throughout the year.

“As we reflect on the years, it is evident that God’s heart is for this community. We have seen many challenges but also been inspired by the stories of change and restoration,” said Liebenberg.

She said looking to the future, SoH remains committed to its mission of being a facilitator of change that starts at an individual level.
