Kingsway High rugby team ranks 124th in South Africa

The first-team rugby played 11 games, won 10, lost one, scored 299 points and conceded 91 points this season.

KINGSWAY High School’s first-team rugby ranked 124th in the SA School Sports First XI Top 200 ranking and ended their season with a win against Curro Hillcrest last month.

The school’s head of rugby, Mark Cameron, said this phenomenal achievement and their new record speak for themselves. The first team played 11 games, won 10, lost one, scored 299 points and conceded 91 points.

“This achievement is the result of the hard work that has been put in by coaches and players over the past three years. We played some quality rugby teams from various high schools in the province, as well as a touring team from Vereeniging. What makes this even more special is that eight of the 11 matches were played away,” he said.

At the conclusion of the season, Kingsway secured a 24–19 win. Cameron said it was great to end their season at home, with some good rugby being played by both sides.

Kingsway High School’s first-team rugby player, Ntando Maphumulo, scores a try.

“With a big pack of forwards and big backline players, we knew that we would really need to play well to end our season on a high. We started very well by scoring two tries early in the first half. Credit needs to be given to Curro Hillcrest for fighting hard to stay in the game. At the break, we led 19–14. We knew that it was going to take a special and disciplined second half to win the game. We managed to score a late try to take the lead and finally win,” said Cameron.

The school is also proud of its three coaches who were been appointed to the Southern KwaZulu-Natal side, their six first-team players selected for the Southern KwaZulu-Natal U19 side, as well as two first-team players selected for the KwaZulu-Natal U18 Invitational side.

The U18 Inter-Provincial Tournament took place from June 26 to 30, with the U19 tournament from June 30 to July 5 in Reitz, Free State.
