Businesses support Pet Supply Drive for Amanzimtoti SPCA

Following the Amanzimtoti SPCA’s urgent plea for assistance, businesses at the Southgate Business Park have rallied together to help. This month’s drive ends on June 29.

SOUTHGATE Business Park has heeded calls made by the Amanzimtoti SPCA, who recently made an urgent appeal for food and financial assistance.

Amanzimtoti SPCA’s Michelle Hannan said their year-end financials told a heartbreaking story. “We have always saved for a rainy day, but sadly, those days came full force for us last year. The truth is we no longer have that financial buffer, and every month, we are running at a loss. We are really worried, and we need help,” she said.

Hannan appeals to the community to consider making a monthly donation or contacting them to donate directly to their bills. The SPCA is also seeking support from and collaboration with businesses and companies.

“Sadly, we receive no government funding, and we rely on your generosity to keep doing the important work we do. People often take SPCAs for granted because we’ve always been there, but there are many who have been forced to close their doors. Please help us continue to be a voice for the voiceless,” she said.

A business owner in the park, Brett Smith, who regularly supplies the SPCA with cleaning products, informed other businesses about the animal shelter’s plea.

After some support started to pour in, Melanie Pieters and Shane Benvie of Elpis Service Centre decided to start a monthly Pet Supply Drive.

“They need our help, and we cannot be without them in our community. Not only are we encouraging those in the business park to donate, but those in the community, too. Animals cannot look after themselves; they need our help,” said Benvie.

The drive runs from June 13 to 29, and items can be dropped off at 29 Beechgate Crescent, Unit 2 between 07:00 and 16:00. They do not accept cash; instead, encourage people to donate directly into the Toti SPCA’s bank account.

Frans van der Merwe, Southgate Business Park’s manager said, “We have found stray animals in our area and have called the SPCA to fetch them. On a few occasions, we have found cats, dogs and even goats wandering around – some in poor condition and some in danger of being run over by traffic. In all of these incidents, the staff at the SPCA were most helpful, picking the animals up.”

He said he was proud to report that several business owners and individuals have pledged funds towards their plight, with donations of food and other items steadily coming in.

Monetary donations can be made into the following bank account:

First National Bank
