Kingsway High debaters head to national championships

The school's debate teams have been dominating the Durban Coastal League, with four learners being selected to compete in an individual capacity.

FOUR learners from Kingsway High School have been selected for the National Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (NIDPSC) in September.

The event, hosted by St. Mary’s DSG in Kloof from September 22-25, is structured so that participants speak in their categories over several rounds working towards a final. Thereafter, a team representing South Africa will be selected to compete at an international level.

Makanaka Mudyiwa, Kwande Ntobela, Neo Miya and Nkanyezi Nzuza are four of eighty learners heading to the nationals. They will be accompanied by the school’s debating coordinator, Cara Kruger.

“Our teams have been dominating their debating events, so being invited to nationals means the school and its learners have been recognised for their hard-work. Our formidable four are nervous to go up against schools and individuals they haven’t before, yet excited for the opportunity they’ve been presented with,” said Kruger.

The school’s debating team have gone up against some of the highest ranking schools in the DCDL (Durban Coastal Debating League), and successfully won five out of seven events; hoping to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

“The four selected senior learners, who have been awarded best-speakers, have been mastering their craft leading up to nationals. What makes this tournament more difficult is they will be competing in an individual capacity with different categories, not just debating,” said Kruger.

The learners said they are feeling confident, because of the winning culture they have adopted over the last five consecutive wins.
