Isipingo Post Office robber sentenced

Ayanda Mthembu was arrested after a shoot-out with the police.

THE Durban Regional Court sentenced Ayanda Mthembu to 12 years imprisonment recently for an armed robbery that was committed at the Isipingo Post Office in 2021.

The Hawks’ spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, said Mthembu (26) and his accomplices entered the post office and held the staff at gunpoint. They also assaulted the employees.

“They then took an undisclosed amount of cash and five cellphones. They fled the scene in their getaway vehicle which was later spotted at the Umlazi area. A high-speed chase and shoot-out ensued, and Mthembu was injured during the shoot-out,” said Mhlongo.

He was taken to the hospital under police guard and was later charged with armed robbery. He appeared in court several times until he was convicted.
