Soccer season kicks off at Hutchison Park

Toti United Junior Football Club's teams were at various fields across Durban, including their home ground at Hutchison Park.

THE 2023 soccer season kicked off in style recently with about 280 teams from the Durban Central Football Association gracing various fields.

The teams are made up of various age groups, ranging from U6 to U19 and Senior. Each age group has eight teams, all competing to be crowned the winners of the league at the Champion-of-Champions at the end of the season.

The games are played in a home-and-away format, with each age group playing 14 games. On the first day of the season, Toti United Juniors Football Club scored a mixed bag of results – winning three games, drawing three games and losing four games.

The club’s chairperson, Zenzo Ncube, said the club secured fairly good results which they can work on and improve. “The games were exciting, with lots of spectators watching the young champs play. The games were played in a friendly, vibrant atmosphere throughout Durban,” he said.

The U12B team was the only team to play at home, narrowly losing the game at the last minute. “Despite not winning them all, the results show a bright season ahead. We are confident our pre-season friendlies and training will bring the results we are looking for. We are looking forward to the season and bringing home some silverware,” said Ncube.

The association now also boasts a girls league, which kicked off on the same day. Zenzo said the girls brought home an outstanding 7-0 win against a New Germany team.

“They made us proud, proving that the foundation is solid and the future is bright. We also encourage more girls and women in Amanzimtoti and surrounds to join the sport,” added Ncube.

There will be a few games played at Hutchison Park on Sunday, May 7 from 09:00. The community is encouraged to come and support their home teams.
