Athletes dominate at submission tournament

Ground Quest allows athletes to prove their skills have improved, test themselves against the best and claim the gold.

ATHLETES from the Combat Coaching gym walked away with a handful of wins at the Ground Quest Submission Tournament held at the Greyville Convention Centre recently.

Ground Quest is a submission-grappling tournament for all MMA (mixed martial arts), BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu), judo, and wrestling athletes from young to old, novice to master, children, women and men.

The platform allows all to prove that their skills have improved, test themselves against the best and claim the gold. The day saw over 100 participants, with about 15 children and 20 adults from Combat Coaching.

The participants competed in their respective weight divisions, and the round-robin format ensured all got multiple matches on the day. The children’s matches worked on a submission and point system, while the adults were by submission only.

Coach Morné Swanepoel said his team dominated the event, with the most competitors from one team, the most supporters on the day and the most top three places and medals.

“The competition was tough, as there are lots of amateurs and EFC (Extreme Fighting Championship) athletes going head-to-head. Our guys did really well, and I’m happy with the results. This was most of the students’ first time competing at this level,” said Swanepoel.

The athletes are currently training for various upcoming tournaments.
