Athlone Park baker wins Gold Award in competition

Cake designer shares why she started decorating cakes and how she won the competition.

PROFESSIONAL baker Erina Erasmus of Athlone Park, won the Gold Award for her Disney-themed one-tier-wonder cake in an online cake-designing competition held internationally.

Cake Champions is a competition to celebrate the skills and techniques of cake designers in South Africa and around the world. The annual event showcases talent and creates an opportunity for creativity and growth.

The categories to choose from include illusion, painted, cookie art, one-tier wonder, cupcakes and mini cakes, wedding cakes and sugar flowers.

Erina, who is going into her sixth year of professional baking, chose the one-tier-wonder category. This was the first competition she has ever entered.

The rules of the competition were that progress photographs had to be sent during and after the competition, in order for the judges to see that the cake was made and designed by them. There were also specific criteria they were marked on, such as detail, creativity and the base being covered in fondant.

“My love for Disney books and movies inspired my theme, which includes 13 different Disney characters. My favourite cakes to design are character cakes for children. I can sit for hours making figurines,” said the passionate baker.

She believes she won the Gold Award because of her attention to detail and ensuring it looks immaculate. “When I make a cake and I’m not happy with it, I’ll take everything off and redo it,” said Erina.

Her passion and interest in creating and baking sparked after leaving her full-time job and becoming a stay-at-home mother. “A fellow baker asked me if I could make figurines for one of their cakes. I never knew I had it in me, however, I’ve always been a creative person. I enjoy drawing, and figurines almost made them come to life. The rest, as they say, is history,” said Erina.

Her dream is to one day expand her business by opening a coffee shop, where she can showcase and sell a variety of her designed cakes.
