Toti Athletic Club members take part in Sani Stagger

Kim Anderson also won the prize for 'female athlete of the year' at AAC's recent prizegiving.

MEMBERS of Amanzimtoti Athletic Club (AAC) recently took part in the Sani Stagger, with Kim Anderson winning the 42.2km road marathon.

Sani Stagger is a festival of running with two road events, 42.2km and 21.1km, and two trail events, 38km and 21km, to choose from. All events take place within the southern area of the internationally renowned Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site.

Anderson said she chose to enter the Sani Stagger road marathon, that has a course that runs 21.1km up Sani Pass to the Lesotho border post, and then 21.1km back down the pass. It was her first Sani Stagger event, and she found it extremely challenging.

“I went into the race with no expectations, just to go and enjoy the scenery. I was informed at the water tables that I was the second female, so decided to try and hold onto a podium finish, and managed to catch the leading female in the last few remaining kilometres,” said Anderson.

She had no specific training in preparation for the event, as she has found getting back into a serious training schedule relatively difficult since running the Comrades Marathon.

Anderson also won the prize for ‘female athlete of the year’ at AAC’s recent prizegiving. The club congratulates her on her achievements.

She is finished with races for this year, as she is recovering from an injury. However, she hopes to get back into racing next year.
