The statement came as a response to the SUN’s questions regarding the prolonged sewage outfalls in Winklespruit Beach and at the Longacres Drive and Berrio Avenue intersection in Illovo Glen.

In Winklespruit, at the beach parking lot, thousands of litres of raw sewage from a blocked manhole flow into the sea daily. This has led to an E. coli contamination that has caused the beach to be closed to the public.

At Illovo Glen, Cornelia Marais’ house is at the Longacres Drive and Berrio Avenue intersection, and the sewage has flowed into her yard for the past three months as a result of a nearby pump station being broken. She said this has caused her family to get constantly sick, and she is concerned about the welfare of her pets.

eThekwini spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela apologised on behalf of the City.

“To all our residents who happen to bear the brunt of the malfunctioning of any part of our sanitation infrastructure, we would like to sincerely apologise. We encourage you to work with the City by reporting these incidents, while also ensuring that alien objects do not enter our sanitation system,” he said.

He added that the City has received a R184m disaster management grant that will expedite the repairs of roads, water and sanitation, and other infrastructure that was damaged by the floods.
