Another accident at Toti’s notorious bend

The bend has claimed many lives over the years amid growing calls for something to be done to curb the accidents.

A DELIVERY driver and his assistant escaped injury after their vehicle was involved in an accident on the Amanzimtoti River bend on Andrew Zondo Road on Tuesday, September 20, just before 10:00.

According to the driver, who did not disclose his name, he was driving downhill and was about to cross the bridge when he saw another car driving towards him in the middle of the road.

“I had to swerve to avoid a collision. I lost control of the car, and it went down the river bank. Luckily, vegetation stopped it from going all the way into the water,” said the driver.

However, Ward 97 councillor André Beetge, who also arrived at the scene, disputed the driver’s version of events.

“It was because of reckless driving and speeding. Just after the accident, I received a call from another motorist who said this bakkie was driving so recklessly, it almost took her out,” said Beetge.

A towing company arrived at the scene and pulled the bakkie from the bank.

There have been many calls over the years for traffic-calming measures to be installed near the Amanzimtoti River bridge to stem accidents that have been happening at the same spot, at a rate of at least one per month.
