The CommUnity Project supports those in need

The CommUnity Project is a community-driven project, by the community, for the community, to make Amanzimtoti a better place for everyone.

THE CommUnity Project recently hosted a blanket drive in honour of Mandela Day to distribute blankets, food and clothing to the destitute on the streets.

The day encouraged people to do something good for someone else, or for the community. The CommUnity Project’s Michelle Arenz said the blanket drive is just another way of giving back and bringing dignity to people.

“This initiative came about from an awareness of the difference between enabling and caring. Our goal is to care for those people who find themselves in a situation that they don’t want to be in, to keep the hope of change alive,” said Arenz.

Residents in the Amanzimtoti area generously donated blankets to the project. They also handed out food and clothing. Those who attended the drive were split into teams, and they handed blankets out to individuals on the street, between Winklespruit and Durban.

For one month, starting from Mandela Day to August 19, various projects have been put together to assist some of the non-profit organisations (NPOs) in the area.

Their upcoming projects are:

  • Collecting items for Mother of Peace-Illovo children’s home. They ask for donations of bread, milk, toilet paper and monetary donations towards the home’s fuel costs.
  • Partnering with Jona Vaughan Home, to do some general maintenance and collect items for its residents. They ask for volunteers to help paint, replace tables and repair cupboards and for donations of toiletries, pool chemicals and party snacks.
  • Partnering with Hearts of Toti to collect items for those in need in our community. They ask for donations of non-perishable food items, toiletries and cleaning products.

The drop-off point is at 18 Trevor Wadley Close.
