Teen author pens book

The lockdown inspired Melokuhle Ngcamu to become an author.

A YOUNG teenager from Mashiwase, near Lovu township, has launched her writing career with the release of her book, Mind of a Twelve-Year-Old, which was published last year but was officially launched this year.

Melokuhle Ngcamu, 13, conceived the book during lockdown after she found herself with a lot of time on her hands.

“My mother had bought my sister and I diaries, so I decided to write all my thoughts down. I wrote about my life experience as a child,” said Melokuhle.

The book has lessons for both young and old. It teaches adults to always listen to children, while also inspiring young people to be obedient and to love education. Her mother, Boni Mthethwa, said she initially dismissed Melokuhle when she said she wanted to publish her diary as a book.

“After a while, I took the manuscript to a friend of mine who is a publisher, and she told me that the manuscript is complete. It was only then that we went ahead and published it,” said Boni.

Besides writing, Melokuhle has appeared in adverts promoting certain brands. The Grade Eight learner at Ixopo High School also loves to cook, and she enjoys dancing. She has plans of writing a follow-up book in the near future. The book costs R100 and can be ordered by calling Boni on 082 643 6150.
