Edu-Paw hosts their graduation ceremony

They taught the children basic canine care, instilling love and compassion to turn the tide on neglect and cruelty.

GRADUATION day for Edu-Paw’s Class Nine, to celebrate the culmination of their eight-week canine care programme, was recently hosted at the Amanzimtoti SPCA,

It was indeed a proud moment for the teachers and volunteers at Edu-Paw, who handed certificates and hampers to the children. Thereafter, the class got to enjoy lunch and a cake baked by Alta Jansen van Vuuren from J&A Creations.

“We had a great bunch of children who were keen to learn and do their best to implement what they were taught,” said founder of the organisation, Cathy Keegan.

During the course of the programme, they taught the responsibility of owning a dog. This included the topics of the correct food to feed them, providing adequate shelter and bedding, treatment of ticks, fleas and mange, and special care required for puppies. It also included the topics of disease and the importance of deworming, vaccinations and sterilisation, as well as dog training and the evils of cruelty to animals, such as fireworks and dog fighting.

She added that: “ We have an amazing community of supporters, and we are so grateful to everyone who helped us with graduation and throughout, both in big and small ways. We are so very grateful.”

With Class 10 set to commence on August 13, Edu-Paw is in need of funding to deworm, sterilise and vaccinate the dogs in the programme. “Some children, unfortunately, lost their dogs due to a recent outbreak of distemper. This shows the importance of vaccinating dogs at a young age, which all boils down to education,” said Keegan.

Money is also needed for the vet account, dog food, blankets, collars, leads and shampoo, as well as for the printing of their educational material.
