Land identified for the Umgababa flood-displaced

The municipality is conducting technical tests on the land to determine its suitability for building on it.

ETHEKWINI Municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, has confirmed that land suitable for building houses for people who lost their homes in Umgababa, during the April floods, has been identified.

A number of families are housed in shelters after a landslide destroyed their homes during the heavy rains. They are currently housed in Umnini Thusong and at N2 Ultra City market stalls. Mayisela said the land has been provisionally identified, pending the outcome of the technical studies which are currently underway.

“The city is working closely with government and private stakeholders to ensure that residents who were displaced are housed,” he said.

The displaced people that the SUN spoke to said they had not received any updates from the municipality since moving into the temporary shelters. Nombuso Mbele, who is staying at N2 Ultra City with her family of seven, said she hopes the matter of their accommodation will be resolved soon as it has not been easy having so many people crammed in one place.

“It has been a tough three months. We have no idea when we will move from here because no one has told us anything. We are just taking it day by day,” she said.

eThekwini has not revealed the location of the site for building, pending technical studies.
