Kilts and pipes thrill Toti at 59th Highland Gathering

This year's Highland Gathering saw 7 500 people attend the biggest spectacle of Scottish bands in the southern hemisphere.

ON Saturday, April 30. there was a hive of activity as the Amanzimtoti Lions hosted the 59th annual Highland Gathering, after a two year hiatus due to Covid-19.

This year’s Highland Gathering saw 7 500 people attend the biggest spectacle of Scottish bands in the southern hemisphere, as bands from all over South Africa made their way to Hutchison Park for the day.

The line-up brought back some old favourites, as well as exciting new additions.

New to the event was the DJ Tent, from where popular East Coast Radio DJ, Dave Guselli, oversaw the day’s proceedings.

Those who attended the event were met with a variety of things to do and see, such as inflatables for the children, horse rides, a classic car show, food stalls, arts and crafts, an action area where ET Security hosted a demonstration, flea market, a bar, Mr and Miss Highland Gathering beauty pageant, dancing by Rhythmic Dance Studio and Toti Hillbillies-line dancing as well as Zulu, Indian and Scottish dancers, steel drums, a line-up of top-class local performances, a hop-on hop-off Ricksha bus courtesy of Durban Tourism, bag pipers and much more.

The Highland Gathering also added to the ‘green theme’ this year by welcoming on board NPO, the Clean Surf Project, who collected recyclable material throughout the event, while promoting environmentally friendly practices.

And last but not least, Keely Crocker singing her rendition of ‘amazing grace’ before the mass band marched and played in unison.
