Injured Toti biker recovers well

Andrew Smith had to be airlifted to hospital after his motorbike collided with a tractor in Amanzimtoti.

THE 28-year-old Amanzimtoti man, who was involved in an accident in Entombeni Drive on recently, is making good progress in the hospital even though his leg has been amputated.

Andrew Smith had to be airlifted to a private hospital in Umhlanga Rocks after his motorbike collided with a tractor. The driver of the tractor has since been arrested after it was revealed that he was drunk and had been driving recklessly.

Smith was able to call paramedics as well as his parents, who all quickly arrived at the scene. His mother, Margaret, said his left leg had been crushed below the knee and his shoulder was broken. Emer-G-Med and Netcare 911 paramedics stabilised him at the scene before being fl own to the hospital.

“After having his leg amputated below the knee, the doctors are monitoring his progress. He is awake and remembers everything that happened on the day of the accident. He is keeping a very positive attitude, but we don’t know if depression will set in,” said Margaret.

Smith works in the security field as an armed response officer. His mother thanked the community who came out and assisted where they could.

“They even formed a shield around the paramedics as they were busy stabilising him and prayed. Thank you to each and every one of you,” she said.
