Retired South African professional golfer visits Amanzimtoti Country Club

Gary Player was seen on the green playing a social round of golf with his family.

THERE was a welcoming atmosphere recently at Amanzimtoti Country Club when the legendary Gary Player visited the golf course.

The Amanzimtoti men’s team played a 4-ball betterball medal on. Winning on a score of 63 was Norbit du Pont and Nick Brits, followed by Colin Scorer, Ian Smit, Chris Coetzee and Mike Halse in third place. Closest on the 7th hole was Martin Taite and Pat Fowler was closest on the 17th hole.

The women’s team played individual stableford with Sue Daniels winning on a score of 41 points, followed by Brenda Morgan on 37. Nearest the pin on the 4th hole was Lass Davis.

The third round of the men’s league took place, and the women’s team played the 1st league of the year. Then men’s A side had a bye and the B side took on Bluff. The morning foursomes went the way of the Bluff team going up 3 and 1.

The only point for Amanzimtoti was the pairing of Sean Roberts and Aveedh Singh winning 5 and 4.

The singles seemed to fair better with Bluff winning 5 and 3, and Peter Dalton, Aveedh Singh and Sean Roberts all winning their games. The loss of the day was Michael Mare losing 8 and 7. The Amanzimtoti side went down 8 and 4. The Allerton side took on Royal Durban at Cotswold Downs.

The foursomes went the way of Amanzimtoti going up 2.5 to 1.5, notables being Cecil Heydenrych and Peter Tiearney winning their first game 4 and 3 with Johan Roux and Les Brown going up 3 and 2.

The singles were slightly worse with Amanzimtoti losing 5.5 to 2.5. Cecil Heydenrych and Nico Vogel won their game with Peter Tiearney halving his match. Amanzimtoti side went down 7 and 5.

The men’s team played an outstanding monthly mug competition, with Patrick Cruickshank winning the A division on a nett score of 71, followed by Mark Bingham and Nico Vogel.

Peter Tiearney won the B division on a nett score of 72, followed by Barry Buckland and Louis Steyn. Piet Bredenham won the C division on a nett score of 71, followed by Norbert du Pont and Martin Rumbelow. Nearest the pin on the 4th hole were Gitesh Maharaj.

The women’s team played a 4-ball alliance and winning on a score of 94 points were Magali Crosthwaite, Atri Wilson, Sue Daniels and Brenda Morgan.
