Toti NPO puts victims first

The Amanzimtoti-based organisation highlights the plight of the abused.

AMANZIMTOTI Trauma Unit – Turning Point is working hard to make an impact during this year’s 16 Days of Activism campaign.

The non-profit organisation facilitates the physical, mental and emotional well-being of victims of trauma, crime and abuse. The centre’s manager, Lorraine Odendaal, said research shows that nearly one in three women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime.

“As many as a 150 million girls worldwide are raped or subject to sexual violence each year, usually by someone in their family circle. In times of crisis, like during the Covid-19 pandemic, we have seen that the cases of abuse and violence against women/girls increased. Violence against women and children is never acceptable, never excusable and never tolerable.

During this campaign, the Toti Trauma Unit – Turning Point will create awareness on the following:

– How do you know that you are being abused?
– What you can do when you are being abused?
– What are the signs that your friend is being abused?
– How can you help an abused friend? How can you help an abused child?
– Who can you contact if someone you know is being abused?
– How can a person stop abusing their partner or children?
– Who can you contact to stop your abusive behaviour?

She said anyone can contribute by signing the pledge against gender-based violence.

“Challenge practices that add to gender inequalities. Support the victims and seek personal help to change harmful behaviours. Protect children from exposure to violence and harmful content on the internet, social media and teach children values of gender equality,” she said.
