Covid-19 vaccines rollout for Amanzimtoti elderly

Among the several residents who were vaccinated at the civic centre was Amanzimtoti resident, Mike Mattews, 60, who said the experience of getting his vaccine done was a good one.

The second phase of the Covid-19 vaccinations was rolled out for residents over 60 at the Amanzimtoti Civic Centre on Tuesday, 18 May. Residents who registered through the electronic vaccination data system (EVDS) registration portal were given their jabs.

“Albeit with relatively short notice, several residents arrived from 7am with the vaccine arriving shortly afterwards under SAPS escort only to find the pharmacist not yet in attendance. While deliveries were redirected towards other areas, residents were processed to confirm registration particulars rendering all ready to receive the vaccine upon its second arrival at 9am,” said ward 97 councillor, André Beetge.

The original batch of 150 vaccines was increased to 200. The past week marked vaccinations facilitated on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8am to 3pm. There are further rollouts planned for the coming weeks that will also include on-site vaccinations at old aged homes.

“Residents who have registered and received notice to report to a specific outlet can, however, instead be accommodated locally, albeit then on a first-come first-served basis.  We encourage those who remain doubtful to also register lest they change their mind and find themselves unregistered and unable to be vaccinated,” Beetge added.

Among the several residents who were vaccinated at the civic centre was Amanzimtoti resident, Mike Mattews, 60, who said the experience of getting his vaccine was a good one.

“It was a bit tedious to wait for the vaccine but I was treated by 10am. I have chronic conditions such as hypertension and asthma so I thought it would be best to have it done since I’m at a higher risk of being infected. While I did not contract the virus, I did have a scare a few months ago and thankfully the test came back negative. I recommend that other elderly residents get their vaccines done as soon as possible. I know a lot of people who passed on and this virus is incredibly serious.”

To register on the website:
First, make sure you have internet access.
You will need a smartphone, a tablet or a computer.
Connect to the internet and go to vaccine enroll.health.gov.za. The welcome screen will guide you through the steps and this is what the demonstration team will show us shortly.
It is important to follow the instructions and put in all the details the system asks for.
When you are finished, the system will send an SMS to the phone number you provided. This SMS will confirm that you are registered. This means that the system now has your details in a queue to be scheduled for your vaccine.
When it is your turn to be vaccinated, the system will send you another SMS with a date and the place where you will be vaccinated. If you put in the correct address, you will be sent to the vaccination centre that is closest to your home. Some of you may be directed to your place of work.
If you have problems you may contact the Covid-19 Hotline at 080-002-9999. A dedicated call centre for the EVDS is being finalized and that number will be announced and displayed on the EVDS portal when you register.
