Passionate about serving the community

Not only does she have an extensive educational background, but her commitment and service to the community and victims are also remarkable.

Passionate about serving the community, is 28-year-old social worker, Orienda Pepu, who recently joined Amanzimtoti Trauma Unit (Turning Point).

She is incredibly dedicated to assisting those in need and aims to protect vulnerable women and children in the community. Orienda graduated from the University of Fort-Hare after obtaining a bachelor of social work degree in 2014. She also completed courses in employee assistance at the University of Pretoria and HIV testing services from the Clinical Services College.

Not only does she have an extensive educational background, but her commitment and service to the community and victims are also remarkable. She was inspired to join the trauma unit after hearing about the incredible work it does for the community.

“My experience so far has been great,” said the mother of two. “Everyone is accommodating and very welcoming. This is an environment where I can grow and it will empower me. It is also wonderful that I get to meet various stakeholders and networks in the community. We often have to deal with victims of gender-based violence and child abuse, and this is deeply troublesome. Any type of violence needs to be dealt with immediately. If it is not resolved, the cycle of abuse continues.”

She believes that organisations should work together to achieve better results and assist more people in need. The mission of the organisation is to provide care and support to victims of trauma and abuse as well as facilitate restoration by empowering individuals, families and the community.

“One of the highlights of my career while working at Turning Point, is being able to be part of the end gender-based violence campaign. This is something I am very passionate about and I want to make a positive difference in people’s lives. It is important to help others grow as individuals while growing our organisation. There are no boundaries to who we help or assist.”

Orienda married Thokozani six years ago and they have two children. She enjoys reading and spending time with her family. Wellness of the body and mind is also very important to her.
The organisation is based at 1 Queens Terrace, Doonside and can be contacted on 082-456-8743 or email info.totitraumacentre@gmail.com.
