Kingsway High School teacher retires

The best thing about teaching is the children themselves.

Rajesh Sewpershad, 64, taught for 38 years and 21 at Kingsway. “My first posting was at Dundee Secondary, followed by Clairwood High School. I then joined Kingsway High School. I didn’t really want to be a teacher, however my inclination was always with science. I felt that there was a need for improving science education and decided to follow this path.”

Rajesh taught physical science and natural science from Grade 8 to Grade 12. “I taught all grades, because there is a need for the junior grades to be exposed to physical science and experimentation.”

He was born in Isipingo and did his schooling at Isipingo Primary, Isipingo Heights Primary and Isipingo Hills Secondary. After school he studied at the University of Durban in Westville for a Bachelor of Science degree and UHDE, and completed his post graduate honours and masters at the University of Natal.

His wife is also a science teacher, at Isipingo Hills Primary School. They have twin daughters, Deepika and Sohini, who attended Kingsway High School and are both qualified chartered accountants.

His last official day was the last day of term three on 23 October. “It wasn’t difficult to finish the curriculum during lockdown. Fortunately the matrics returned earlier and we also kept in contact with them via the portal and pursued online teaching. The syllabus was completed long before trials could commence.

“The best thing about teaching is the children themselves. Most are very appreciative and they understand the difficulties associated with learning and understanding a subject like physical science. Also most of them have become professionals in their field. I often meet some of them and they still remember me! The worst is teaching a subject that is difficult to grasp by learners and coming across disappointments by some.

“During my retirement I will still help science learners in need. My services will always be available to them. I also want to pursue my hobbies, which are gardening and photography. I will miss the family atmosphere at Kingsway – it was my second home. The teachers and learners made every day special.”
