Death of well-loved Amanzimtoti journalist

Maud was a senior journalist and editor at the South Coast Sun for over 25 years.

Family and friends mourned the loss of the legendary and much-adored Maud Frean, who died in Howick on 30 August.

Maud was a senior journalist and editor at the South Coast Sun for over 25 years, who was well-known for her wonderful, hilarious and often controversial weekly column ‘From my Broomstick’. Her hugely popular column provided an amazing snapshot and insight into South African home life, the Toti community and hot topics, both local and national, at the time.

Her career at the Sun began in the 1970s with a manual typewriter and 35mm film camera, before moving on to ‘cutting edge’ electric typewriters and eventually computers in the 1990s.

She will be sorely missed and celebrated by all who had the great and unforgettable pleasure of knowing her. Maud leaves her great legacy across three continents of her husband Neil, who has been by her side for over 53 years, three daughters, three sons-in-law and six grandchildren.
