[WATCH] – Helicopter pilot soars to great heights

"When looking for suspects, I have to get information on where the suspect was last seen from the ground team and then conduct air patrols in that area."

Helicopter pilot Trishen Govender, 26, keeps a watchful eye on more than just the scenery. He is tasked with conducting aerial patrols and track suspects while providing vital information to PT Alarms’ security ground teams.
In 2014, he began training at JNC Helicopters, but he put his dream on hold to pursue other interests. He was also unable to study and work at the same time. Determined to grab hold of his goals, he relocated to Port Elizabeth, where he completed his studies at the Helicopter Pilot Training Centre.

“It was difficult to leave my family behind. There was a lot of sleepless nights and long hours that went in, but in the end it was worth it. It was my father’s dream to see me complete my qualification and it was amazing knowing that I made my family proud,” said the Athlone Park resident.

Recalling his most memorable flight, Trishen said that while conducting his last practical, he was unsure if he passed his exam when he was congratulated over the radio air control by several airline pilots.

“Flying requires a great deal of skill and knowledge. Flying is the easy part, but you need to fully understand the aerodynamics and principles that go into it. There are many aspects such as the weather, buildings and electricity cables that you need to be aware of. It is also essential to log a flight plan before flying.  When looking for suspects, I have to get information on where the suspect was last seen from the ground team and then conduct air patrols in that area. Before a flight, we have to do proper planning and ensure that the winds are consistent in advance and the follow-up just before the flight.”

Trishen encourages youngsters who are interested in becoming pilots to go for their dreams.

“Once you are up there, nothing else matters. All the hard work will pay off,” he added.

Aside from flying and fighting crime, Trishen also enjoys drag racing.
