Push a pedal for Jona Vaughan Home

The Roadies will cycle to Scottburgh and back, and the mountain bikers to Umkomaas and back.

Climb on your bikes and pedal for a good cause. Jona Vaughan Home, that caters for more than 85 physically and mentally-challenged residents, is in dire financial constraints, due to insufficient government funding to sustain or maintain its staff compliment. Amanzimtoti Cycling Club (ACC) members are putting their best pedal forward to help raise funds for the institution and invite the Toti public to join them. “We are hosting a fundraiser ride on Sunday, 11 October,” said ACC chairman, Barry Walker. “Cyclists will leave from our clubhouse at Amanzimtoti Sports Centre (ASC) at 6am.

The Roadies will cycle to Scottburgh and back, and the mountain bikers to Umkomaas and back. The fundraiser is open for anyone to join in – you don’t have to be a club member. You also don’t have to be an expert cyclist or ride all the way to the turnaround point – you can turn back at Winklespruit or Illovo Beach. There will be vehicles following to ensure the riders’ safety.” The cost is a donation of R100. Sponsors will spoil riders with a bacon and egg roll and bottomless coffee at the clubhouse afterwards, so that all funds collected get donated to Jona Vaughan Home. ACC is slowly getting back on the road after lockdown. “The Roadies have a weekend ride to Durban and back on the weekends and the MTB riders have been doing rides at Rocky Bay, Renishaw, Cannonborough in Umkomaas and Virginia Farm and Trails in Easton.”

The riders also have a blast around the awesome track at ASC that Barry has put so much time and effort into on Thursdays and on the weekend. It might only be 6km long, but it’s a hard 6km and the public are invited to either ride, run or walk there. He plans on hosting an open day at the end of November to encourage more people to use the facilities and even put on a MTB skills clinic for younger and novice riders to benefit from. Watch this space closer to the time for more details. For more information on the fundraiser ride or open day, call Barry on 083-459-8253.
