Alma makes top 10 at drama competition

The competition is an opportunity for young actors to take part on a huge scale, where winners will be announced nationally.

Alma van Heerden is the fearless Grade 11 learner who was recently selected for the top 10 of South Africa’s first online performance competition, Drama Web SA.

The competition is an opportunity for young actors to take part on a huge scale, where winners will be announced nationally.

Alma, who is on the road to recovery after being diagnosed with acute lymphoma leukaemia in 2018, described being selected for the competition as amazing and said, “The experience was surreal, I would have never thought I would be selected. The monologue I wrote was about personal experience I have had a while back. Writing about it helped me get through it and cope better. The poem was one I did for Valentine’s Day for an assignment about love and how we feel that we aren’t worthy of the love we receive from our partners. Words cannot even describe what winning would mean to me.”

The talented teen is no stranger to the lime light. She has been taking part in the ATKV Tienertoneel competition since 2016 and has represented the KwaZulu-Natal team in Johannesburg in 2018.

“Acting has always been a passion of mine. I remember the first day of high school when I saw one of my school’s productions. Since that moment, I wanted to be on stage. I have always been a dancer so being on stage felt natural. There is nothing in particular that would make me stand out from a crowd. I am just a loudmouth with an act for performing! I love writing my own material, but always ask my drama teacher, Magdel Brand, for her input. She has taught me everything I know and is a brilliant writer,” said Alma.

When asked where she sees herself in the future, the passionate individual said, “Hopefully somewhere where I can use my platform to make a change and inspire children who are struggling to keep on fighting. Always keep on fighting. Things do get better. Much better,” she added.

The top five participants in each category will take part in a live online final round where three judges will adjudicate and announce the top three in every category. In this time where all South Africans are house bound with eisteddfods and competitions having been cancelled or postponed. The competition gives children a chance to encourage each other nationwide, stay positive while celebrating creativity and talent.
