Domino Foundation helps Amanzimtoti learners cover up

Domino’s life skills and literacy programmes helped sanitise the two schools.

‘To mask or not to mask’ is not even a question as school children emerged from lockdown to start lessons again on Monday, 6 July.

Fifteen hundred learners at Zwakele and Ekuthuleni primary schools received masks custom-designed and made by Uzwelo Bags and sponsored by Discovery Health SA on behalf of their South African Olympic swimming ambassador Chad Le Clos for his namesake foundation.

The foundation has been established with the goal of developing swimming among children from backgrounds where access to pools and training are limited or absent. The ‘new normal’ facial protective wear was distributed to the two local schools which partner with the Domino Foundation’s literacy and life skills programmes.

With June being Youth Month in South Africa, commemorating the young people of 1976 who stood for freedom and the right to equal education, Discovery’s generosity will help ensure the protection of schoolchildren who were able to resume their education which has been on hold for three months.

The masks, in their five design variations, are no ordinary personal protective equipment. Each of the 100% local items with its antimicrobial and water-repellent finish has a filter included and is sustainable in that it can be washed and reused.

The donation of the masks came at just the right time as the youth workers with Domino’s life skills and literacy programmes had completed their roles in helping sanitise the two schools.

“We have so appreciated Discovery’s donation and the efforts of Domino’s youth workers to ensure the school is a safe space for our learners,” said Zwakele Primary School’s deputy principal, Goodenough Mnembe.

Leigh-Ann Stevens, leader of both the Domino programmes, speaking of the coming together of the two NPOs and the insurance giant, noted: “Our combined efforts are helping to ensure that learners are as safe as they can possibly be in their school environment to restart their education with confidence.”
